ExNet's Philosophy
ExNet is in the Internet business because it wants the services itself---we are
end users of our own service. We provide the service because we think its
useful, not because it is today's fashion accessory.
The core services we use and sell are electronic mail, World-Wide-Web access
and publishing, USENET electronic news, FTP and Telnet---we believe these
represent the most value for the least pain. We actively encourage the
reselling and sharing of services by our customers to minimise costs and
maximise access.
Electronic Mail
The ultimate tool for fast communication---person-to-person,
country-to-country. You can read and send ``email'' just like paper mail, but
it takes less time to reach its destination anywhere in the world than it takes
you to walk to your nearest Post Office, and there are no stamps to lick.
There are tens of millions of people worldwide within reach of your email.
Web Access
A valuable search tool and publishing medium. We provide and maintain stable
and reliable Web-browsing tools, and can help you with everything from
publishing a single Web page (for free), and onwards. We have a dedicated
Web-publishing division.
USENET News
Just like a huge electronic newspaper with sections on hundreds of topics, a
massive number of contributors, guides to getting more from your Internet
connection, and even small ads. USENET News interfaces well with email and is
often the springboard for commercial and leisure contacts.
UUCP
UUCP is a fast, efficient mechanism for transferring mail and news to and from
your machine in the home or office to us and thence the rest of the world. You
can take your time preparing and reading email and news on your own machine and
then have UUCP squirt it down the 'phone line for only a few pence when you're
done. The safest and cheapest way to connect a business to the Internet.
Internet Domain Names
If you are are a business or a BBS you may like to have your own Internet
`street address' containing your organisation's name. For example, we have
`exnet.com' and all our staff have email addresses like `fred@exnet.com'. We
can arrange this for you.
Telnet and FTP
Sometimes you will want to connect live to the other side of the world over the
Internet, for example to work on a client's machine in California. Or you may
wish to retrieve files over the Internet via FTP (the File-Transfer Protocol).
For this we provide the Telnet/FTP service as an add-on to any account.
The Handbook
To help you navigate your way through the Net, and through those mundane but
vital chores such as setting up your modem, we provide a 100+ page handbook
when we set up your first account.
